I have been having this problem for last couple of days now and I have finally figured out that an update was done KB946983, uninstalling this resolves the problem.

I have recently been getting application hang in word 2007 with the below event logs:

Microsoft has issued a fix for this problem below, but this did not resolve the problem for myself.
